Bust #14: Andre Ware (1989)
Playing for the University of Houston Cougars in the infamous “run and shoot” offense, Andre Ware threw for 4,699 yards and 44 touchdowns as a junior, setting 26 NCAA records and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1989.
But his career with the Detroit Lions was ill-fated from day one, even as the #1 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. Lions’ scouts strongly advised against taking Ware, but then head coach Wayne Fontes took him any way. Fontes then followed up that decision by keeping Ware on the bench, buried behind Rodney Peete and Erik Kramer. By 1995, Ware had to head to the CFL to resume his football-playing days.
