But the Jets believed that O’Donnell’s miserable performance in that Super Bowl was an outlier. For some reason, just getting the Steelers to the Super Bowl was enough to warrant a five-year, $25 million deal.

While nothing compared to today’s salaries, that was a decent chunk of change at the time. Not surprisingly, O’Donnell’s deal was a disaster. In his first season in New York, O’Donnell led the Jets to a franchise-worst 1-15 record. He spent most of the following season in Bill Parcells’ doghouse and was eventually released, going 8-11 as a starter throughout the rest of his career.
