26. Cincinnati Bengals – Trading Away Wide Receiver Charlie Joiner
Despite struggling with injuries early on in his career, wide receiver Charlie Joiner eventually become a valued member of the Cincinnati Bengals offense in the mid-70’s. In fact, then Bengals offensive coach Bill Walsh — yes, the same future Hall of Fame head coach — called Joiner “the most intelligent, the smartest, the most calculating receiver the game has ever known.”
But the Bengals clearly didn’t see that potential, as they traded him away to the San Diego Chargers (at Walsh’s recommendation, as the coach had moved on there as well). Joiner became a two-time All-Pro and eventually was inducted into the Hall of Fame, thanks to his work in San Diego.
