28. Carolina Panthers – Acquiring Defensive Tackle Sean Gilbert
The Washington Redskins slapped the franchise tag on defensive tackle Sean Gilbert after the 1996 season, which Gilbert eventually refused to sign, leading him to sit out the entire 1997 season.
The Carolina Panthers didn’t see that as a red flag, signing him away from the Redskins and being forced to “trade” them two first round picks — which the Redskins eventually parlayed into a top 3 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, Gilbert had a largely uneventful career in Carolina.
