After failing to acquire pass rusher Pat Swilling from the New Orleans Saints as a restricted free agent in 1992, the Detroit Lions eventually traded for Swilling the following offseason. Detroit even paid an additional $1.4 million to waive the no-trade clause he had with New Orleans.

Not only was Swilling not nearly the same player in Detroit that he was in New Orleans (while his contract clogged up Detroit’s salary cap), but the Saints used the draft picks that Detroit sent over on two future Pro Bowl players: fullback Lorenzo Neal, and future Hall of Fame left tackle Willie Road.
