We’ve spent most of the last year stuck in our homes unable to travel or vacation due to the global pandemic. We’ve endured endless virtual meetings, online school for our children, and forced distance from our friends and family. Because of this, most Americans are getting serious cases of wanderlust and have begun planning their vacations when life returns to normal.
Inspired by that we’ve put together a list of some of the most exotic and well-traveled tourist spots our wide world has to offer. But this list comes with a catch, a dose of reality. Because these destinations are so popular, don’t expect you’ll be the only one there.
Each destination includes two sides; what your imagination tells you the spot will be like, and then the harsh reality of what these popular locations are actually like. We apologize for ruining your dreams ahead of time, but we figured it was best to spoil your illusions now rather than once you booked your trip. Enjoy!
Fantasy: Palace of Versailles
For many years the opulent Palace of Versailles was the home of the French monarchs. That all came to an abrupt and violent end with the French Revolution, but fortunately the ornate building still stands today.
Take a trip out to Versailles and you will be stunned by its beauty. Everywhere you look you’ll see gold, diamonds, and other luxurious accoutrements.
Reality: Palace of Versailles
There is no denying it’s a must-see when visiting France. The only problem is that means it’s a must see for everyone visiting France. The elegance is over the top and stunning. So are the massive amounts of people squeezed into each room.
You best bet is to visit during the low months of November through March, if you can. It will still be busy, but you may be able to extend your arms without hitting another visitor.
