Back in the early 1990’s, taller kids growing up in central and eastern Europe were often pushed to play basketball, especially after witnessing the success of “The Dream Team” in the 1992 Summer Olympics. That was just the case with Zdeno Chára, growing up as a kid in Slovakia. But Chára obviously became a hockey player, as well as the tallest Center in the history of the National Hockey League at 6’9 (and 250lbs). He is the second European-born and raised captain to win the Stanley Cup, which he won with the Boston Bruins in 2011.
