Best: New York Jets – Joe Namath
Broadway Joe earned that nickname the hard way, by winning football games and leading the Jets to victory in Super Bowl III. Namath even predicted victory over the favored Baltimore Colts in that Super Bowl, making good on his prediction with a 16-7 upset. Namath was not just prolific on the gridiron but was also well known in the nightlife scene in New York City. He became a cross-cultural icon in the 1960’s and 70’s.
Worst: New York Jets – Vernon Gholston
In his final season at Ohio State Gholston broke the university’s single-season sack record with 13 and was named an All-American. Despite that, more than a handful of NFL Draft analysts wondered, aloud, whether Vernon Gholston was more of a “workout warrior” then bonafide stud prospect. The Jets drafted Gholston 6th overall to be a pass-rushing force, but in three seasons in the NFL, he didn’t record a single sack. Look at those arms! It’s shocking that a player with that type of gladiator-like physique (and no major injuries) could amount to so little in the NFL.
