The returns the Raiders have received on Ferrell just aren’t there over his first few seasons in the NFL. By the start of his third pro season in 2021 when Ferrell should have been coming into his own, he wasn’t even a starter. That made it an easy choice for the Raiders to pass on his fifth-year option, essentially confirming that he’s a bust.

In fact, Maxx Crosby, who was selected in the fourth round the same year that the Raiders drafted Ferrell in the first round, has turned out to be a far better player. For someone who was such a big-time player at Clemson, it’s a little surprising to see Ferrell flop in the NFL. But that’s exactly what’s happened to him.
