This is the first of our “tragic entries,” with Gathers’ sad story marked by his death on the court March 4, 1990. Gathers, the high scoring forward for the Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles) when he collapsed during a game. He even had a TV movie made about his life and all too premature death, the predictably titled Final Shot: The Hank Gathers Story.

The Lions, lead by Hank Kimble, made a memorable run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament in 1990, inspired by Gathers’ memory. That was the last time the Lions made the tournament, which will be thirty years’ passed by next season.
