During his four years at the University of Wisconsin, Ron Day set the the NCAA Division I-A rushing record for total yards in a career, and became one of the most decorated college football players ever. After the previous record had stood for almost two decades, Dayne broke the all-time NCAA Division I career rushing yards record held by Ricky Williams, who had set the mark the year before.

After Williams set the mark with 6,279 yards in four years, Dayne shattered it by going for 7,125 yards during his four seasons in Madison.He won the Heisman Trophy at the end of the 1999 season, among a slew of other postseason awards, ahead of nominees like Michael Vick and Drew Brees.
