5. Darlington Raceway – Darlington, SC
When it opened in 1950 the track was the first speedway over one mile in length — 1.336 miles to be exact. As you’ve seen from our list, the majority of tracks are now over a mile. That means Darlington is both a trendsetter and classic.
Despite sagging ticket sales, Darlington continue to be packed each time it hosts a NASCAR race. While the tradition-laden track lost its Labor Day race, it now hosts one of the earliest races of the season in April. Perhaps management hopes a packed house at Darlington can jump-start the season.
