Hard to imagine, but English bulldogs were bred to bait bulls, a popular sport in England for centuries until it was banned in 1835. They were nearly wiped out from the gruesome sport, but fanciers transformed them to gentle companions.

They’re now the national dog of England, and so many American institutions have the bulldog as mascot. Their physical makeup means they can’t swim, so keep a careful eye on your bulldog if they love water.
