Dachshunds are compact guard dogs that come in various coats (long-haired, short-haired, and in between) and colors. Yes, they’re guard dogs. Their name means “badger hound” in German, and they were bred to hunt badgers.

During the World Wars, their popularity died down, especially with Nazis claiming they taught one doxie to speak, but doxies are always popular in the US. Andy Warhol loved his dachshund!
