They come from Germany, not Denmark. A French naturalist encountered them in Denmark and called them le Grande Danois, or the Great Dane, and the name just stuck. Famous because of Scooby, Great Danes are also known as gentle giants now.

But they were originally called boar hounds. They were bred to be fierce and strong enough to take down boars. As hunting became obsolete, they became show dogs, and then family dogs. They are rarely aggressive.
