Brendan Haywood
A three-year starter for the Tar Heels, Brendan Haywood patrolled the paint for the 1999-2000 UNC team that advanced to the Final Four. As a senior, Haywood also recorded the first triple-double by any player in school history, which encompassed a school record 10 blocks along with 18 points and 14 rebounds. When he left Chapel Hill, Haywood was the all-time leader in blocked shots (with 304).
Selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards acquired his rights on draft night. Haywood’s career early on was characterized by inconsistent, spotty, and “soft” play, earning Haywood the derisive nickname of “Brenda.” While the latter portion of his career did bring about success, he was always seen as a mostly dispensable big man.
