When the common football fans hears about the multi-million-dollar deal signed by many of our favorite NFL players, we can only dream about the riches these guys will enjoy in their life. And we’re also led to believe that these guys, with all their new fortunes, will never have to work a day in their life, after they’re done playing football.
Unfortunately, it’s quite the opposite. Many NFL players are left in bad financial shape shortly after they stop making those millions, for a wide variety of reasons. We highlight a handful of those reasons, when identifying some of the best NFL players to earn huge contracts, and end up without much money, shortly after.
Warren Sapp
Career Résumé and Earnings: One of the cornerstones of the great defenses of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the late 1990s and early 2000s, defensive tackle Warren Sapp retired in 2007 as a 7-time Pro Bowl selection, 6-time All-Pro, and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1999.
Between his time with the Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders, Sapp reportedly earned over $82 million over the course of his 14-year career.
