When Dan Marino was sliding down in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers greatly debated selecting Marino with the 21st overall pick, as an heir apparent to Terry Bradshaw. The Steelers weren’t spooked by the rumors of Marino being a drug user (which were proven totally false), but decided to stick to their organization MO and take their favorite defensive player in the draft, in defensive tackle Gabe Rivera. But in his rookie season, Rivera was involved in a horrific car accident that left him paralyzed.
