Keith Smart, Indiana (1987)
Keith Smart, whose real first name is actually “Jonathan,” played for head coach Bob Knight and the University of Indiana Hoosiers from 1986 through 1988, after a brief stint at Garden City Community College in Kansas. Most people remember Smart because of the fact that he hit the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA championship game, which gave his Hoosiers a 74–73 victory over the Syracuse University Orangemen. Smart had a very undistinguished NBA career, which basically lasted about two years, before he ended up playing professional basketball overseas in the Philippines. Smart’s career as an NBA coach, however, has fared better, serving as interim head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings at various points. He is currently an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies.
