Alonzo Mourning
The 2nd overall pick of the 1992 NBA Draft, Alonzo Mourning was one of the most athletically gifted players for his size (6’10 and 240lbs) that the NBA had ever seen. He and Larry Johnson formed the foundation for one of the most intriguing and entertaining teams of the mid-1990’s in the Charlotte Hornets, before contract issues and personal quarrel’s broke up the young nucleus. After being traded to the Miami Heat, where he had a very successful sting, Mourning’s career was cut short due to a kidney disease called glomerulosclerosis, with which he was diagnosed.
To this day, he remains a part of the Heat organization, serving as the Vice President of Player Programs and Development, which covers community outreach and mentoring young players.
