This one is a bit of a mystery, in terms of why we loved them so much as kids. They were virtual pets that would alert you when they needed to eat, sleep or poop. That’s it. They just sent you alerts. So did pagers in 1997, but no one went crazy for those.

Still, they were so sought after that 15 Tamagotchis were sold every minute in the U.S. and Canada at the toy’s peak in popularity. Meanwhile, North American pets everywhere longed for the attention given to virtual ones.
