Michigan State had a pretty awesome NBA draft pick in 1979… it just wasn’t this guy. Magic Johnson always made Greg Kelser look pretty good at Michigan State, throwing him highlight reel alley oops en route to Sparty’s first national championship in 1979. Kelser was a two time All American and remains the only Spartan to score 2000 points and record 1000 rebounds.

That pedigree helped Kelser become the number four pick in the 1979 draft, just three spots after Magic. It turns out that Michigan State championship was a lot more Magic than Kelser. Kelser began with the Pistons, another title winner Detroit kept at home, and another one that failed. He recorded under nine win shares in his career, just a touch short of Magic’s 156.
