NBA contracts have skyrocketed in the 21st century. These days if you look across the league, guys like KD and James Harden are making over $38 million a year. Steph Curry makes $40 million a year. It’s absolutely outrageous, but that’s what the market demands.

Yet it wasn’t always this way. Sure, professional athletes have always more than the common man, but not this much more. Guys like Russell Westbrook and James Harden have barely hit 30 and they’re already among the wealthiest players in league history.

But what happens when that contract runs out and retirement hits? We’ve all heard the incredible stories of former athletes gone broke in retirement. Failed investments, too many cars, multiple luxury homes. These are just some of the reasons why stars blow through their incredible salaries so easily.

With all of that in mind, we put together a list of former NBA players with net worths that might surprise even the most hardcore NBA fan.

Allan Houston: $55 million

Allan Houston played in the league for 14 seasons and man did that guy have some big contracts. Houston had 6 seasons of 8-figure salary years. He earned over $135 million in total. Not bad for a guy who only made 2 All-Star teams.

In retirement, Houston has stayed in the game serving as assistant to the president of basketball operations for the Knicks, as well as assistant general manager. Houston also was formerly the general manager for the Knicks G-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks.
