What’s up Bettman? No love for Canada?

On February 1st, 1993, Gary Bettman took over as commissioner of the NHL. Bettman’s top priority was to improve the NHL’s presence in the U.S. market. Maybe Bettman has taken that mandate too far…

Since his first full season as commissioner, 1993-1994, a Canadian based team has not won the Stanley Cup. Prior to Bettman, Canadian teams won more than 50% of all Stanley Cups in NHL history.

While it would be ridiculous to actually think Gary Bettman has something to do with Canada’s recent Cup drought (or that he hates Canada or Canadian hockey) the timing is pretty ironic.

In honor of the last time a Canadian team raised Lord Stanley’s Cup (Montreal Canadiéns) let’s revisit the 1992-1993 season.
