Arguably one of the most well-known (if not slightly scandalous) celebrities perhaps in American history, Marilyn Monroe was a household name during the peak of her popularity both because of her overall appearance and because of her prevalence in pop culture. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Monroe sixth on its list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Born as Norma Jeane Mortenson, the actress signed on with an acting agency way back in 1946. At the time, she chose her future stage name with the help of a Fox studios executive. It was a combination of homage to Broadway star Marilyn Miller, and honoring the maiden name of the actress’ mother.
