While most of us in the United States don’t greet strangers, it’s at least common place to acknowledge a stranger with a nod or a casual “How are you” if you end up in the same room or space as someone you don’t know.

They take it to the next level in France, where it is expected that you say hello to the person you are seeing for the first time. If not, you may insult them by indicating that they are beneath you.
