Sometimes it just takes one incident for an entire reputation to be changed. For Kermit Washington, that was his assault on Rudy Tomjanovich that nearly killed the man. The year was 1977 and the Houston Rockets were playing the Los Angeles Lakers when a scuffle broke out.

Washington decked a few players, including Rudy Tomjanovich who was attempting to play peacemaker. The blow fractured Tomjanovich’s face and left him lying unconscious in a pool of his own blood on the court. He suffered a concussion, broken jaw and nose, and was leaking spinal fluid and blood into his brain.
