Antonio Gates opened up the door for the concept of converted college basketball players becoming tight ends in the NFL. Despite not having played college football, in his second season in the NFL, he had 964 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. He became the seventh tight end with 500 career receptions, and only the second tight end in NFL history to have more than 100 receiving touchdowns. In September of 2017, he moved ahead of Tony Gonzalez for most touchdown catches by a tight end in NFL history. Not bad for a guy who wasn’t drafted by a single NFL team.
