Ian Mahinmi is living proof that if you’re somewhere near seven-feet tall, and you have some modicum of athleticism, some NBA team will overpay for your services. The San Antonio Spurs took a chance on Mahinmi, taking him late in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft (and publicly acknowledging he was a “project” who would take years to develop). The Spurs went on to win the NBA Championship in 2007, and Mahinmi got a ring as a result, even though he spent most of his time in the NBA’s Development league.

Yet, despite averaging less than ten points and nine rebounds in even his best season in the league, the Washington Wizards signed Mahinmi to an unconscionable deal worth $64 million (over four years) during the 2016 offseason.
