Tyrus Raymond Cobb, by nearly any account, is one of the very best baseball players in the history of the game. He’s credited with setting 90 Major League Baseball records through the course of his career, and still holds several of them nearly one century after retiring as a player. But Cobb played in an era before racial integration fully took place, and there are numerous allegations of his intolerance towards African Americans. One story includes refusing to shake a groundskeepers hand, just because of the color of his skin. When the groundskeeper’s wife intervened, Cobb allegedly tried to choke her. Cobb has also been described as a “feisty and ill-tempered” individual who spent much of his career “downing painkillers and scotch.”
