Bust #8: Troy Smith (2006)
In one of the weaker years for Heisman Trophy candidates, Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith beat out Darren McFadden of Arkansas and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame to win the award. Smith won 91.6% of the first place votes that year, which was the largest such margin ever recorded.
But the undersized Smith wasn’t coveted by the NFL world, as he fell to the 5thround of the 2007 NFL Draft, and spent the majority of his career as a backup for the Baltimore Ravens, or an ineffective starter for the San Francisco 49ers. By the end of the 2010 season, he was out of the NFL.
