Bust #10: Danny Wuerffel (1996)
As the maestro of head coach Steve Spurrier’s “Fun and Gun” offense at the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel led the Gators to back-to-back Bowl Alliance national championship games after the 1995 and 1996 season. In the latter year, the Gators not only won the title, but Wuerffel was awarded the Heisman Trophy.
However, Wuerffel’s lack of arm strength, and lack of NFL “polish” after playing in a somewhat “gimmicky” offense in Gainesville, left much to be desired among NFL scouts. The New Orleans Saints selected him in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft, but Wuerffel was out of the NFL after a career that lasted just six seasons and across four NFL teams. Pictured here with the Washington Redskins where he teamed back up with Coach Spurrier to no avail.
