Following in the Elway family’s footsteps just over two decades prior, Archie Manning — the patriarch of the Manning family — publicly declared that he would not have his son play for the San Diego Chargers, who had the first overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Just as how things transpired back in 1983, the Chargers ended up taking Manning anyway (much to his chagrin), only to coalesce to his threat that he wouldn’t play for the team.

The Chargers traded Manning to the New York Giants, in exchange for a package that included quarterback Phillip Rivers, whom the Giants selected in that same draft.
