But Walter Payton endured some miserable losing seasons between 1975 and 1981 (prior to the arrival of Mike Ditka), when Chicago had only two winning seasons (and zero playoff wins).
But Payton’s ability to take poundings game after game, because he was the only thing Chicago had on offense, earned him unquestioned respect for his toughness and resilience, both from his teammates but the entire Bears fandom as well.
