Playing at little-known Alabama A&M, defensive end Robert Mathis set an NCAA I-AA record with 20 sacks during his senior season. But the NFL still viewed him as being too small to be a full-time pass rusher, which is why he fell to the 138th pick (in the 5th round), where the Indianapolis Colts selected him. Under head coach Tony Dungy, Mathis paired with fellow “undersized” defensive end Dwight Freeney, Mathis had nine or more sacks in three of his first four seasons. When Mathis retired in 2016, he was ranked 17th in total career sacks, ahead of his teammate Freeney.
