Roberto Clemente is the proverbial “Godfather” to all the Latin American baseball players currently in the MLB. Clemente is the first Latin American and Caribbean player to help win a World Series as a starter (1960), to receive an NL MVP Award (1966), and to receive a World Series MVP Award The 15-time All-Star won the National League batting championship four times as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he finished his career with 240 home runs, 1,305 RBI, a .317 batting average, and exactly 3,000 hits. His untimely death in 1973 established the precedent that, as an alternative to the five-year retirement period, a player who has been deceased for at least six months is eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame.
