Why is a running back who finished with 1,372 yards and nine touchdowns rushing on this list? It’s because among the the 17 running backs who finished with more than 1,000 yards rushing in 2003, Ricky Williams had the second fewest yards per carry (3.5), and was one of only two running backs among that group to finish with less than four yards per carry on the season. The advanced analytics from that year show that Williams was actually the third worst running back in the NFL among runners who carried the ball at least 100 times. At the end of the 2003 season, Williams reportedly tested positive for marijuana, which led to is one-year sabbatical from the game of football.
