In a span of five years, Marshall Faulk broke Emmitt Smith’s single-season rushing touchdown total record. Then Priest Holmes broke Faulk’s record. And then, in 2005, Shaun Alexander went and broke Holmes’ record, finding the endzone 28 times that year. He was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2005, and helped guide the Seattle Seahawks to their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. But after carrying the ball 370 times in that magical season, Alexander basically emptied whatever he had in the tank. In 2006, he ran for only 896 yards, and a quarter of the rushing touchdowns from the year before. Two years later, he was already out of the NFL.
