2012: Thomas Robinson
Forward Thomas Robinson became one of the hottest names in the days leading up to the 2012 NBA Draft, leading him to be taken with the fifth overall pick by the (perennially ill-fated) Sacramento Kings. The Kings, in their infinite wisdom, decided it’d be a good idea to take Johnson with the fifth overall pick, instead of dynamic guard Damian Lillard — who was taken one pick later. And then, there’s the fact that center Andre Drummond was also taken among the top nine picks of that year. Of course, the entire NBA looks back at this draft and wonders: how did Draymond Green last until the second round (#35 overall)?
