For the NCAA fans surprised we ranked Ewing ahead of Laettner, let us explain… Ewing’s years at Georgetown (1981-1985) marked a difficult time for black athletes. While at Georgetown, Ewing was forced to endure racist chants from the opposing team’s white students. At times, fans even went as far as throwing objects at Ewing while he was on the court. In one game against Syracuse, things got so bad that Cuse coach Jim Boeheim borrowed a microphone and threatened to forfeit the game if fans continued to throw objects at Ewing. Not exactly a shining moment in college basketball history…
