In 1991, the University of Michigan put together what is recognized as the greatest recruiting class in NCAA history. The Fab Five included Detroit natives Chris Webber and Jalen Rose, Chicago native Juwan Howard, and two recruits from Texas Jimmy and Ray Jackson. The Fab Five started a cultural revolution in basketball. Their “Hip Hop” style gave birth to several new things, including more trash talk, long baggy shorts, and black socks. While younger fans embraced the changes of the Fab Five revolution, older fans thought their antics were a distraction from the game itself. Critics of the Fab Five cheered when they were destroyed, 71-51 in the 1992 NCAA Final by Duke, an “old fashion” looking team with tight shorts and white socks.
