2. Christian Laettner (Duke)
It was very difficult not to give Christian Laettner the top spot on this list. After all, fans still wear “I Still Hate Laettner” T-shirts to college basketball games (see pictures below). In their defense, Kentucky fans have good reason to hate Laettner. In addition to his cocky attitude, and dirty play (he infamously stepped on the chest of a Kentucky player during the NCAA tournament), Laettner handed Kentucky one of the most memorable losses in sports history. In the “Elite 8” round of the 1992 NCAA tournament, Laettner caught a full-court pass from teammate Grant Hill with 2.1 seconds on the clock, dribbled once, faked to both sides, and dramatically sunk the game-winning turn-around jumper. More than 20 years after graduating from Duke, he was voted the most hated college basketball player in history in an ESPN poll. This led to ESPN’s creation of the 30 for 30 documentary I Hate Christian Laettner.
