You know the phrase “so close, yet so far?” That could basically describe Fran Tarkenton’s career-long pursuit of a Super Bowl win. Between 1972 and 1978, as the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, Tarkenton was one of the very best quarterbacks of the era, leading his team to six playoff appearances in seven years.

Those six playoff appearances included two losses in the divisional playoffs, a loss in the NFC championship game, and three losses. Tarkenton is one of only three quarterbacks in NFL history to have three Super Bowl losses; the other guy is John Elway, but he actually got a win (or two) by the time his career was over.
