In the case of former Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton, it wasn’t necessarily him who broke the rules. Everyone will remember the alleged “pay for play” issue when Newton was returning to Division 1 football after spending a year playing at Blinn College. There were reports that his father, Cecil Newton, said that it would take “more than just a scholarship” to secure his son’s services. There was an allegation that Newton asked for as much as $180,000 for Newton to potentially transfer to Mississippi State University out of Blinn College. As a result, Auburn briefly ruled Newton ineligible to play, although he was later reinstated since it was ruled that Newton did not know about his father’s activity.
