During the 1999 season, when the Florida State Seminoles would go on to win the National Championship, wide receiver Peter Warrick and fellow receiver Laveranues Coles spent a late September afternoon shopping at the Dillard’s department store. When they went to pay for the designer clothes they wanted to buy, the store cleark charged Warrick $21.40 for $412.38 worth of merchandise. Without asking any questions, Warrick paid the lesser amount. The local police charged Warrick and Coles with grand theft, because the discount they received was so large that it was considered shoplifting. While Coles was kicked off the team, Warrick — who was a Heisman Trophy candidate that year — was simply docked a few game tickets as a penalty.
