In the summer of 2011, numerous reports emerged about University of Miami football players receiving a slew of improper benefits, in the form of meals paid, transportation paid for, nights out at expensive restaurants and nightclubs, and so much more, thanks to the Ponzi scheme run by former University of Miami alum Nevin Shapiro. That led to Miami declaring as many as 13 current football players ineligible. While many of those players did end up in the NFL, one of the biggest name players to be suspended as a result of the investigation was defensive end Olivier Vernon, who was suspended six games by the Hurricanes.
