In the days leading up to the 1986 NFL Draft, when Bo Jackson was likely to be the #1 overall pick coming out of Auburn University, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers — who owned the #1 pick in the draft — took Jackson on owner Hugh Culverhouse’s private jet to visit with the team. Unbeknownst to Jackson, that trip was considered to be a violation of NCAA rules, and Jackson was immediately deemed as ineligible to play for Auburn’s baseball team that year. Jackson was so distraught and angered by being put in that situation by the Buccaneers that he refused to sign with Tampa Bay for the entirety of the 1986 season, even though Tampa Bay still drafted him #1 overall.
