In one of the more ironic seeding quirks of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, the West Regional bracket had four teams from the the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. areas: the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Mason University, and Hampton University. Most people had heard of the first three schools, but virtually nobody knew about Hampton, who was the #15 seed in the region, until they defeated the second-seeded Iowa State Cyclones, who were led by future NBA point guard Jamal Tinsley.
