In many ways, Julius “Dr. J” Erving is the pioneer and father of dunking in the NBA. Before Dr. J, dunks were mostly just a high-percentage shot used by big men to pick up two points.

Erving was the guy who made Erving part of the theatricality of the NBA, and a way to “shock and awe” the opponents he played. Few people realize that Dr. J was the first guy to dunk the basketball from the free throw line.
