Joe Greene

The legend behind “Mean” Joe Greene was much more than a gimmick for a Coca-cola commercial. This man was as revered — and feared — as any player in NFL history. He’s the shining definition of the toughness and attitude that we associate with the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. It’s not just that it was universally accepted that no man could block Greene one-on-one. Rather, it’s the fact that this is a man that walked onto the field and went face-to-face with Dick Butkus, and actually caused Butkus to back down. ESPN’s Tom Jackson once described an incident where an angry Greene began moving towards the bench of the Denver Broncos, and the whole Broncos team recoiled in fear. He was the reinforcing steel of Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain.”
